Blacksaddle Toby (Canthigaster valentini)

About Blacksaddle Toby

A pocket-sized puffer with personality — recognizable, curious, and one of the few pufferfish small enough for a mid-sized reef. Will sample coral polyps and small inverts opportunistically; not a fully reef-safe choice.

Valentin's sharpnose puffer, also known as the saddled puffer or black saddled toby, is a demersal marine fish belonging to the family Tetraodontidae. The saddled puffer is a small sized fish which grows up to 11 cm. It is widely distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indian Ocean, Red Sea included, and until the oceanic islands of the Pacific Ocean. It inhabits rocky and coral reefs, lagoons and external reef until 55 m. Canthigaster valentini has a diurnal activity.

Notes from the editors

What it looks like. Small, compact puffer with bold black saddle markings on a white body, yellow tail, and bright blue eyes. Among the smallest pufferfish kept in reef-style tanks.

In your tank. Curious and interactive — quickly recognizes the keeper. Reef-compatible with caution: will sample LPS polyps, small ornamental shrimp, and feather dusters opportunistically. Best in fish-only or fish-heavy reef tanks where some loss of inverts is acceptable.

Care notes. Puffer teeth grow continuously — they need hard-shelled foods (clams in shell, krill with exoskeleton) to wear them down. Excess teeth growth eventually prevents feeding. Pairs are uncommon in captivity; usually housed singly.

Sourcing and feeding. Wild-collected from Indo-Pacific; widely available. Mimicked by the filefish Paraluteres prionurus — verify species before purchase. Carnivore — clams, mussels, krill, hard-shelled meaty foods 2–3 times weekly.
