About Azure Demoiselle
Vivid yellow-and-electric-blue damsel — much more peaceful than its reputation suggests, especially in a larger tank with established territory. Beautiful color contrast against rockwork; hardy under nearly any reef conditions.
Chrysiptera hemicyanea, known commonly as the azure damselfish, azure demoiselle, half-blue demoiselle, and yellow-dipped damsel, is a species of damselfish.
Notes from the editors
What it looks like. Vivid electric blue body with a yellow rear half — the contrast is striking and the fish photographs beautifully. Adult size ~3 inches.
In your tank. Much more peaceful than its damselfish reputation suggests, especially in tanks 50+ gallons with established territories. Holds a small territory but rarely picks fights with non-damsel neighbors.
Care notes. Best added early in the stocking order before more aggressive fish establish territories. Two azures can be kept together in tanks 75+ gallons; pairs are unpredictable. Reef-safe.
Sourcing and feeding. Wild-collected from Indonesian reefs; widely available and inexpensive ($10–20). Hardy and beginner-friendly. Omnivore — pellets, frozen mysis, occasional algae.
