About Midas Combtooth Blenny
Unusual blenny — it swims in mid-water rather than perching, with a lyretail and shimmering gold body. Peaceful, beginner-friendly, and one of the few blennies that integrates well with active swimming tankmates.
Ecsenius midas, known commonly as the Midas blenny, Persian blenny, lyretail blenny or golden blenny, is a species of marine fish in the family Blenniidae.
Notes from the editors
What it looks like. Bright golden-yellow body with a forked lyretail. Unusual among blennies — swims actively in the open water column rather than perching on rocks.
In your tank. Peaceful and reef-safe. The mid-water swimming behavior makes it integrate well with active tankmates. Holds a loose territory but rarely picks fights.
Care notes. Beginner-friendly and one of the easier blennies to keep alongside other active fish. A tight-fitting lid is recommended — they're capable jumpers when startled.
Sourcing and feeding. Wild-collected from Indo-Pacific reefs; widely available ($30–60). Primarily herbivorous — nori, algae, prepared herbivore foods.
Care info is a starting point, not a guarantee. Individual specimens, water chemistry, and tankmate dynamics vary. Verify against multiple sources and adjust to what you observe. See our terms & disclaimers.
