Notes from the editors

What it looks like. Sea anemone with long, leathery tentacles often tipped with purple or yellow. Larger than most BTAs — adults can reach 12+ inches across.

In your tank. Wanders extensively when first introduced. Sting is potent — keep delicate corals out of reach. May host Amphiprion clownfish but acceptance is unpredictable.

Care notes. Screen all pump intakes. Sting is harmless to most people but can cause welts; avoid handling with bare hands. Best in mature 50+ gallon systems.

Sourcing and feeding. Wild-collected from Indo-Pacific reefs ($60–200). Photosynthetic; supplement weekly with frozen mysis or silversides.

Care info is a starting point, not a guarantee. Individual specimens, water chemistry, and tankmate dynamics vary. Verify against multiple sources and adjust to what you observe. See our terms & disclaimers.
