Notes from the editors

What it looks like. Large carpet anemone with short, sticky tentacles forming a thick mat. Color ranges from green and tan to vivid blue and purple. Adults reach 18+ inches across.

In your tank. Powerful sting — will eat fish that contact the tentacles. Not safe with most reef fish; best in dedicated species tanks or with carefully chosen large tankmates.

Care notes. Wanders extensively when first introduced. Screen all pump intakes. Carpet anemones are notoriously difficult to dislodge once settled, so initial placement matters.

Sourcing and feeding. Wild-collected from Indo-Pacific reefs ($80–250). Photosynthetic with mandatory supplemental feeding — silversides, large mysis pieces, krill 1–2 times per week.

Care info is a starting point, not a guarantee. Individual specimens, water chemistry, and tankmate dynamics vary. Verify against multiple sources and adjust to what you observe. See our terms & disclaimers.
