Red-striped Shrimpgoby (Stonogobiops yasha)

About Red-striped Shrimpgoby

Yasha goby — partners with a pistol shrimp in a shared burrow, just like the Pinkspot. The yasha is smaller and more nano-friendly, and the red-striped white body is striking. Always buy the goby-shrimp pair together.

Stonogobiops yasha, the Orange-striped shrimpgoby, is a species of goby native to the Western Pacific Ocean where it occurs at depths of from 15 to 40 metres. It inhabits sandy areas along the outer slopes of reefs where it lives in a commensal relationship with the shrimp Alpheus randalli. This species can reach a length of 4.7 centimetres (1.9 in) SL.

Notes from the editors

What it looks like. Slender white body with vivid red horizontal stripes and an elongated first dorsal fin. Among the most striking small gobies in the hobby.

In your tank. Forms a commensal pair with a pistol shrimp (typically Alpheus randalli) like the larger shrimp gobies. Smaller adult size (~2 inches) makes the yasha more nano-friendly than Cryptocentrus species.

Care notes. Buy goby and shrimp together — pairing success drops dramatically with separate purchases. Reef-safe and peaceful.

Sourcing and feeding. Wild-collected from western Pacific reefs ($60–120 as a pair). Carnivore — frozen mysis, brine, copepods, small pellets.
